So a couple years ago I made a track called Miss Your Tape using samples from 2 different soul songs. I don’t know which ones they are off hand, because it’s been a while! I finally had the chance to play the song out at a show this past week and it was fun. There is also a Phantom’s Revenge remix of the song here.

I made a song called Lighthouse sometime ago, using just a microkorg, and some assembled drums in Ableton 7. The original sample at the very beginning is taken from the song a 70’s song (I can’t remember it now). I was very happy with the track, because the bassline felt very close to something Fred Falke would have played.

In the Summer of 2007 I was hauled up at home for the most part, trying to get over a girl. I put on Sophia Coppola’s “Maria Antoinette” and fell in love with the travelling and hunting scenes scored by Sweden’s The Radio Dept. I went into an empty bedroom and started recording.
I tuned my acoustic guitar so that I could play it easier (I’m not very good at playing anything in Standard Tuning) and allowed the inspiration to come to me. I pictured being with beautiful people in beautiful places, and started to write love songs inspired by songs like New Order’s Ceremony.
Putting it all together, I called a photographer friend of mine Daniel Wood to help me take some photos. Heading out to the outskirts of Calgary a few friends of mine played in tall grass and I looked on as my muse moved about looking incredible.
Fast forward a couple years, and I found that I haven’t released the damn thing. Funny, I kept putting off recording vocals, or getting the money to release it on iTunes. There were times when this album drove me crazy, just thinking that it would never be finished or that it wouldn’t go anywhere.
Well about 2 years later, here it is for free. The end product of a couple months of writing and production and a couple years of sitting on a instrumental gem.
Special thanks to all involved who made it happen (back then).

I made the On The Playground mix (Fall 2008) just like I made the Pop Life mix, using bits and pieces of songs and samples. This time, those audio bytes are taken from random tapes found by Sweet Thunder. Hearing children have fun while I let loose cutting and pasting and arranging music truly went hand in hand. For an added bonus, my friend Chelsee sung some words I had written once, and I threw that in as well :)
Here are the pieces:
Jessica’s Heart Shirt
The Bird and the Bee - Fucking Boyfriend
Jessica Want’s a Kitty
Sebastien Tellier - Roche (Breakbot Mix)
H-I-J-K-L-M-N-O-P
Midfield General - Disco Sirens (AutosyncratiK Edit)
Rock-n-Roll Pow Wow
Paris Is Burning - Ladyhawke
The Kiss Sisters Read Love Letters
Mr. Oizo - Jo
Siriusmo - Simple
Chelsee Albo Sings Close To Modern
The Best Kid In School

I take polaroids whenever possible, even though they’re kind of pricey. To make them worth their paper I usually insist that I use my film to shoot people. Of course there are exceptions but for me it’s true that I care less about my photos that don’t have someone’s spirit captured and removed from this World.
This photo is of my friend Gen, and it is for a free release Ninetynine and myself are putting out.
The Mache mixtape was a fun way to make a move to some very good things. I had the opportunity to work with Calgary producers IllAngelo and Ninetynine, who are very promising guys who I learned a thing or two from. And as a group, this little mixtape helped fellow producer Ninetynine start some business over in Europe. In 2010 he’ll have the opportunity to play over there. For IllAngelo, well another notch in this young producer’s belt of accomplishments. For myself, I’ve been able to reach a couple more listeners around the World. Especially in Russia, where our mixtape was being sold Illegally!

I made a 15 minute mix last year called “Pop Life” using Ableton Live. I really had a good time assembling fragments from video and audio, doing my best to parallel them in such a way that low’s mid’s and hi’s of different songs softly pulled apart to create new harmonies. It was a great opportunity to give songs I’ve always loved, a new context.
Also cool to mention, the Lykke Li - Little Bit (Pierce Edit) I made on this mix was used by Kaiti Dangerkat Pasqualotto for a freestyle dance. I produced a version of it for Kaiti to include in her video!
Here is the mix track list:

My friend Alex of The Karma Police is a good man who loves good music. He offered a suggestion that I listen to Empire of the Sun’s “Walking On A Dream” and I liked it instantly. It didn’t take me long to come up with an idea for a very simple remix. I put it on You Tube, using some pictures from my trip with Alex, Ryan and Sandy to Montreal where we’d seen Daft Punk live in 2007. It seemed fitting.
I still think this remix is one of the better ones out there, even though the production could use some improvement. I hope this remix continues to get more plays though, because I love the simplicity and the universality of it.
You can download my remix here.
